14 June 2012: Londoner Helena Martins has won support from Google+ after she set up London Photowalks, an online community for London-based photographers who organise photographic walks in and around London.
The group, which arranges monthly ‘photowalks’ on Google+ and shares its photos online, has today launched a national competition to find the photo that best represents London life during this celebratory summer.
Google+ is so impressed with Helena’s e-community spirit, they’ve invited her to visit London’s Google HQ to meet the Google+ team and talk about how she set up the community.
“All the London” photo competition launches today in a live Hangout and runs in partnership with Kaplan International Colleges. The competition is designed to celebrate London life as the world’s eyes focus on the capital during summer 2012. Photographers are asked to enter their photos between Friday 15th June and Saturday 30th June.
Members of the public will then be invited to vote for their favourite image online. The 10 most voted for images will face a judging panel including Helena Martins from Photowalks London and Erez Tocker from Kaplan International Colleges. The winner will be announced on Thursday 12th July.
London Photowalks launched on Google+ in November 2011 and now has over one thousand members, demonstrating the popularity of capturing London’s highlights on camera and sharing them online. The original Photowalks group was set up for Helena’s colleagues, but soon became a popular London-wide initiative for keen photographers.
Since the launch of the group Photowalks have taken place in a number of popular London locations including, including East London, Canary Wharf, Notting Hill and Portbello Market. London Photowalks meet once a month and in-between use Google+ to arrange mini walks, share photographs and use Google+ Hangouts to share photographic advice with one another.
Google has recognised Helena Martins for connecting photographers from across London through Google+ and for raising money for her chosen charities, Hearing Dogs and Action on Hearing Loss.
Google said: “Helena is a great example to her community. She is doing some fantastic work bringing together photographers on Google+ who would otherwise have not known each other. Google+ is a great platform for any group of people with a shared passion to meet up and share their interests and experiences. We’re delighted that Google+ has allowed Helena to organise photowalks and launch a competition to celebrate the fantastic summer London is going to enjoy this year.”
Helena Martins, who set up Photowalks London said: “Google+ is the perfect online platform for photographers to engage and share their work online; not only with those already into interested in photography, but also new members joining our Google+ community every day. Being able to share our work and exchange views with photographers across the world on Google+ is amazing – and it’s completely free”
Helena Martins also created Photographer Volunteer, a project which connects photographers wishing to volunteer their skills to charities for free. The group has already helped a variety of charities including Sea Shepherd, Action on Hearing Loss and Tommy’s with photo shoots. Photography Volunteer is a UK based project but has members from around the world who have registered their interest in volunteering for projects outside the UK.
